Are Carrots really good for my eyes?

It is an age old legend that eating carrots are good for your eyes. Generations ago, an oracle must have passed down this secret remedy to our ancestors. But is this legend true or simply a myth?

The amazing answer to that is a resounding YES!

Carrots do have high levels of carotenoids. But so do papayas, sweet potatoes, bell peppers and even spinach. Carotenoids are the pigment cells in plant cells which give it the yellow, red or orange hues. Carotenoids act as powerful anti-oxidants which prevent damage from free-radicals running amok in our body.

How do carotenoids help our eyes?

Carotenoids come in many forms. Carotenoids are forms of Vitamin A. Vitamin A isn’t specifically one particular vitamin but rather different types of molecules which have similar positive effects on the human body. Some carotenoids convert into retinol and enhance the health and function of our retina. There are two other important oxygenated carotenoids that help to protect the eyes from damage by absorbing harmful blue light and Ultra-violet light. These are Lutein and Zeaxanthin.

Vitamin A also helps to protect the corneal surface from desiccation. People who suffer with dry eyes should consider including more carotenoids into their diet. Vitamin A also helps in the battle against age-related macular degeneration. Patients with early stages of age-related macular degeneration are usually prescribed supplements with lutein. As mentioned earlier, lutein is one of the essential carotenoids present in many fruits and plants.

The rule for beautiful and healthy eyes is simple. Don’t smoke and consume lots of fruits and vegetables!
